Muslim Ethics and the Ethnographic Imagination

Theoretical and methodological discussions of ethnography ethics have appeared regularly in the Journal Religious Ethics for at least past 13 years. Many these conversations been preoccupied by relationship between “normative” work religious “descriptive” on moral worlds patterns reasoning. However, there has often a perceived impasse when it comes to drawing ethical arguments from fine-grained ethnographic study. This paper begins assessing significant contributions made ethnographers Islam, focusing way they render stark descriptive/normative binary irrelevant. I then turn an example my own fieldwork that expands our understanding ethics. Through this example, argue thinkers working outside academy—theologians, activists, cultural producers—also draw “ethnographic imagination” make arguments. end reflecting how situates as part broader humanistic inquiry, showing careful accounts people do live are always enmeshed with visions we should live.
